WHAT ARE YOUR LAWN PLANS FOR
THE REST OF 2010?

ARE YOU PLANNING ON MAINTAINING YOUR GRASS FOR THE YEAR?

ARE YOU GOING TO PLANT NEW GRASS, OR THICKEN
UP YOUR TURF THIS FALL?

JULY= GRUB PREVENTION TIME!
STEP THREE for a lawn maintenance plan: Summer Fertilizer with or without
summer bug control.
Summer fertilizer helps your lawn stay lush and green!  We have summer
fertilizer by itself, with surface insect control (fleas, ants, ticks) or summer
fertilizer plus grub prevention.
GRUBS: Grubs are the larvae of the Japanese beetle.  Once a grub matures over
the summer months, it will have a feast on your lawn's root system unless it is
prevented.
Merit stops the grub from doing its damage.  It can only be applied
during the month of July to be effective in the Northeast.
If this step is missed, all hope is not lost!
Dylox, is a grub killer that maybe
applied during the fall, if a grub outbreak occurs.  It kills the adult grub.

Here is an example of the Grub life cycle.

Ventura Grain carries MERIT grub prevention products in a few different forms:

The month of September is a great time to start  or thicken up a lawn!

The keys for good grass growth are GOOD PLANTING SOIL (LOAM), PICKING THE
RIGHT GRASS SEED FOR YOUR YARD'S CONDITIONS,MAKING SURE THE GRASS
SEED IS WATERED CORRECTLY, AND SOIL TEMPERATURE.

Ingredients for a successful new lawn:

Loam: at least 8-12 inches of good planting loam

Grass seed: Ask yourself; is your lawn going to be a high-traffic area, are you
going to be able to water your grass enough when the hot summer weather hits?

High traffic blends:
Triplex Perennial Rye Grass:
Rye grass has a bunching characteristic and loves to take a
pounding.  It is used frequently on athletic fields, as it can rebound from the abuse it takes.  It
grows very quickly.
Tall fescue/Sports Turf Blend: Tall fescues are great for areas that can not get a lot of water.  It
has a very deep root system, and because of this it can exist on less water.  It is great for people
who do not have irrigation or for cemeteries that do not have access for a lot of water.

Sunny Blends:
Kentucky Blue Grass Blends: Topline 1 or University Select
:  Kentucky Blue Grass is
very unique in the sense that for every seed of blue grass, 15 blades of grass are produced.  This
is great for tightening up an existing lawn.  Bluegrass loves sunshine!

Sun and Shade Blends:
VMG (Contractors Blend) or Topline 2:
These blends are a mixture of Kentucky blue
grass, Triplex Perennial Rye and Fescue.  The percentages of the seed in this mixture does well in
the sun and shade environments.

Water: Watering your new grass is extremely important. If grass seed is watered
in an inconsistent manner this can cause the grass seed to swell and then dry
out.  This will result in poor grass yields.  Consistency is the key.

Soil Temperature: The triplex rye blends can be planted in cooler soil
temperatures, however the sunny grass mixtures that contain Kentucky
bluegrass would require soil temps of at least 60-65 degrees consistently.

Fertilizer: Starter lawn fertilizers with higher phosphorus will help the root system
of new grass grow quickly.  Starter fertilizer should be used every 3-4 weeks until
the grass is about 1 1/2-2 inches in height.  Grass at this time can be cut.  Once
new grass is cut at least 3 times,  other fertilizers such as weed killers can be
used.  If weed killing products are used before the recommended time, seed
can be stunted and will not grow.

We recommend:
16-26-10 starter fertilizer
coverage: 12.500 sq ft...

The fall is the best time to plant a new lawn because ...

There are consistent temperatures, hot weather has passed,
lawn weeds start to die for the year.

When thickening up a pre-existing lawn, slice seeding is a very effective way to
achieve your goal.  A slice-seeder pushes grass seed into pre-existing turf and
gives the seed good soil contact for which it needs to grow.  Slice-seeders can
be rented from your local hardware store.

Combine slice seeding with starter fertilizer and water and you will be very
happy with the results!
LAWN
STEPS:

LIME:
Liming your lawn
keeps the soil pH at a
nuetral level which is
necessary for good
grass growth.
Lime should be
applied every year
during the fall.  Why
the fall?  Lime take
time to break down in
the soil.  By applying
lime in the fall, lime
will work throughout
the winter months to
condition your soil for
the spring!

AERATION:
Lawn aeration is the
secret weapon in
making your lawn
healthy. Aeration
involves making holes
in the lawn either by
pushing a rod into it or
by "coring", extracting
a plug of soil. By
aerating your lawn you
provide the following
benefits to your lawn
and its root system:

* Oxygen gets to the
roots and the soil
allowing it to "breathe"
* Organic fertilizers
and nutrients get
access to the root
system
* Water is able to
better soak the soil
and reach the root
system
* Helps to break up
thatch
* Tight, compacted soil
is loosened up
allowing the root
system to grow

Then watch the results
of your lawn once it is
able to breathe!

DE-THATCHING:
When air, water and
light cannot reach the
soil surface any longer
because of thick
thatch, you have to rip
it out. The lawn looks
rough for a while, but
soon you'll see healthy
new grass shoots
taking off.

You can rent a
de-thatcher from your
local hardware store
or rake it up yourself
with a strong toothed
rake or a de-thatching
rake.

Once the dead thatch
is raked up remove it
from your lawn and
place it in your
compost pile!

Then watch the results
when your grass has
plenty of growing
room!
TIME FOR
MERIT!
